Roskilde Festival
One of the most notable events in Roskilde is the annual music festival, said to be among the biggest and grandest in Northern Europe. The Roskilde Festival happens between the months of June and July. It was created by two students in 1971 and since 1973 was organized every year by the independent, non-profit organization Foreningen Roskilde Festival. During four days the festival draws participants from all over the world, both established and young, talented up-comers. Totally more than 170 bands play during the festival. The music styles include mostly rock, hip hop, heavy metal and electronic, but the festival promotes also alternative music. The biggest stage (tent) – and the biggest in Europe – has capacity of 17 000 people. The number of volunteers working during the festival reaches 20,000.
During the Rosklide festival there are direct shuttle buses and trains to the festival area, departing from the Roskilde station. For example, bus No. 605 (direction Roskilde Handelsskole) with stop at Maglegårdsvej.
Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath, Björk, Robbie Williams, and Arctic Monkeys have all climbed one of the seven stages of this greatest music festival. Since 1971, hundreds of music artists have performed on stage in front of millions of fans. Among other artists participated in festival are: Jay-Z, Kanye West, the Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, Guns N Roses, Metallica, and More.

The festival is so popular today, that many young people in Europe know the Roskilde Festival without knowing anything about the town of Roskilde.
