Royal Danish Embassy – Washington, D.C.

The Danish monarchy is the oldest monarchy in the world. With a list of fifty kings and two queens it is more than a thousand years old. The monarchy has survived from the Viking age till today’s modern constitutional monarchy with almost all the kings and queens related to each other in one way or another. Through history, a child of the monarch or another close relative has been the heir to the throne. This makes it possible to draw a direct line through history from the first Danish king, the Viking Gorm the Old, to the present Queen Margrethe II.

Unfortunately, the list below is not always complete as to the number of children and wives of the monarch – especially in the early years – and the exact dates of birth and death. Because the list is based on general sources, some dates may vary from source to source as may the spelling of names and titles. When possible, the names have been translated into English. When an English version of the name does not exist, the name has been kept as close as possible to the original.

The numbers in italic mark the reign of each monarch, the numbers in parentheses are dates of birth and death, and the number following a “married to…” indicates the year of marriage.

Note # 1

King Magnus the Good (1024-1042) stands out as being the Danish king who was not Danish. He was actually a Norwegian king. According to the legend, King Magnus and King Hardi Canute made the deal that whoever outlived the other should become king of both kingdoms. Another part of the deal was that a male heir of any of the two kings should inherit the joint kingdom. King Hardi Canute died in 1042, and King Magnus the Good ruled over both countries for five years. However, both died without having a male heir, so the grandson of the previous Danish King Sweyn I Forkbeard, namely Sweyn II Estridsen, became the new king. back

Note # 3

In the period 1332-1340, the kingdom of Denmark was not ruled as a kingdom as there was no king with any power, no court, and no Rigsråd (Parliament). Before his death, King Christoffer II had more or less put all the territories of the kingdom in pawn to the neighboring kings and dukes in order to afford the war against the aggressors of the kingdom. Much of the former kingdom was now ruled by Count Gerhard of Holsten. In 1340, the junker Valdemar, son of King Christoffer II, set out to piece together the kingdom. Having been brought up at the court of Bavaria, he had all the connections he needed to succeed, but soon he encountered problems. The treaty of Spandau in 1340 broke the deadlock of the negotiations, and Valdemar was able to get back parts of the country. By his marriage to Helvig, the sister of Count Gerhard of Holsten, he secured a large part of Jutland. The kingdom of Denmark was one once more, and it had a new king. back

HOUSE OF OLDENBURG

King Christoffer III and his wife Dorothea of Brandenburg had no children, so when King Christoffer lIl suddenly died in 1448, Denmark had no immediate heir to the throne. The Danish Rigsråd (Parliament) offered the throne to Adolf, Duke of Slesvig-Holsten, but Adolf felt that he was too old and suggested his sister’s son Christian as the new king. Not only did Christian accept the throne, he also agreed on marrying Dorothea of Brandenburg, the 18-year-old widow of King Christoffer lIl, and thus Denmark had a new king. Even though the new king was not a direct heir to the throne, he was related to the Royal family, more specifically to King Erik V. HOUSE OF GLUCKSBURG

King Frederik Vll had no children, so when he died in 1863, Denmark had no direct heir to the throne. The closest heir was Zar Nikolai I of Russia who descended from King Christian lIl, but he relinquished his right to the throne in favor of Louise of Hessen-Kassel. She was the grandchild of King Frederik V’s son Frederik, and was by that, according to the Danish Constitution of 1665, entitled to the throne. The Danish Parliament decided therefore to offer the throne to Princess Louise of Hessen’s husband Christian whose mother also descended from King Frederik V, so Denmark got a new Royal couple related to the old Royal family.

The links between Frederik V and Louise of Hessen, and between Frederik V and Christian IX are explained here.
