Visiting Green Copenhagen

Alongside being publicised as one of the happiest places on earth, Denmark’s capital city is also one of the greenest. Being green is easier there thanks to the extra wide bike lanes along the roads and the lack of air-conditioning to be found, however, it doesn’t take too much extra effort for you to be even more environmentally friendly when during your next trip to Copenhagen.

Getting There

Flying into Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport and passing over their offshore windmill farm is enough to make any eco-friendly fanatic not want to visit but you can offset this by not driving to and from the airport to the city. You can also enter via the electric-powered Metro’s which are trams without drivers that are the second least environmentally damaging modes of transport. Second only to walking or cycling. They’re every three minutes too so that’s another reason to travel green.

If that’s not enough to convince you to fly in, you can also take an overnight train from some of Europe’s popular cities including Amsterdam, Berlin and London. If you’re heading to Copenhagen from Norway, you can even take the ferry.

Getting Around

One of the most popular ways to explore the city is by hiring a bike and cycling. All you need is a small deposit to borrow the bike, but the use of the bike is actually free. Alternatively, there are a number of cycle shops located in and around the centre where you can pay a little extra and get a bike more specific for your needs.

The public transport in and around Copenhagen is as efficient as they come and the intricate routes throughout the city make it easy to get around without the need of a car or a bus. TheCityCirkel electric buses run in around the city all day and you can simply hop on and opff where you like. IF you are in a rush and you need to take a taxi, make sure you call an Amager-Øbro Taxi. The company buys offsets on all trips so you can sit back and enjoy a carbon neutral ride.

If you fancy a slower trip around the city to take in historic scenery, try an eco-friendly tour on one of the canal tour boats for a relaxed, low-powered winding ride under impossibly low bridges and past sights like Vor Fresler Kirke and the dragon spire on Børsen, the Copenhagen stock exchange building.

There are plenty of cities in and around Europe that do their best to promote greener methods of travelling so before you go ahead and worry about booking your cheap flights to Europe, just think, with a bit of careful planning, you can enjoy a much more eco-friendly stay and you don’t have
